Statement (for Aberrant Creativity:
Teardrops / Raindrops GAN consists of approximately twenty-eight GAN-generated images of teardrops, raindrops, and droplet forms that oscillate between water, jewels, and digital artifacts. Influenced by the visual languages of multiple artists, the images were generated through AI systems, cut to shape, and installed directly on the wall so they appear to drip or slowly descend through the exhibition space.
The work approaches AI-generated imagery as both seductive and melancholic. The drops resemble gems or precious objects, but also tears, condensation, traces of tragedy. Their beauty is intentionally complicated by the conditions of their production: machine learning systems built from massive accumulations of human images, energy consumption, extraction, and invisible infrastructures.
Rather than presenting a simple position for or against AI, the project dwells within the contradictions of contemporary technological life. AI image generation can appear simultaneously as an expansion of human creativity, an undermining of it, and a mirror reflecting broader ecological and cultural crises. The dripping forms suggest grief, excess, leakage, and emotional residue, it is a visual representation for a moment in which technological fascination and environmental anxiety have become inseparable.
Bio:
Noah Travis Phillips is a collage artist working with their private media archive of “made, found, and modified” images to interrelate the personal, mythological, occult, cultural, and ecological. Their practice explores the posthuman and the Anthropocene through both digital and physical formats. At the same time, they aim to subtly insert themselves into art history by cultivating a personal fiction or legend.
They are an artist, educator, and scholar. (BA, Naropa University, Fine Art and Environmental Studies; MFA, University of Denver, Emergent Digital Practices). They are Assistant Professor & FabLab (Z-Space) Coordinator at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design.
