Kick Rocks (Lift Rocks) collaboration appendage, with Lucas McMahon
Kick Rocks (Lift Rocks) unfolds from a simple gesture given unique meaning by its timing in accord with the natural world: a child kicks a stone across the desert as lightning strikes a distant mountain. Around this scene, a constellation of mythological, geological, ecological, musical, and astronomical images cultivates relationships rather than a single narrative. The work proposes that even the smallest encounter with the material world participates in larger cycles of chance, repetition, and transformation. Echoing Sisyphus, the stone becomes less a symbol of endless labor than an invitation to engage an unfinished world, where small gestures resonate across geological time, personal experience, and mythic imagination, and can open onto worlds of relation, curiosity, and possibility.

originally titled "Kick Rocks" by McMahon, Phillips' intention was to shift this sentiment to something closer to "(Lift Rocks)" by expanding on the core themes and imagery with material from their own archive and personal mythology.
